Does Your Dream Match the Size of Your God?

The Power of Dreams

Every person carries dreams within them. Some are small — a promotion, a new car, a comfortable home. Others are larger — starting a business, writing a book, or building a ministry. But here’s a question worth pausing on: does your dream match the size of your God?

Too often, we limit our vision to what feels safe, realistic, and achievable in our own strength. Yet the God we serve is limitless. He calls us not only to dream, but to dream in a way that reflects His greatness.

When Dreams Are Too Small

The danger for many of us isn’t that we dream too big — it’s that we dream too small.

  • A small dream says, I just want to get by.

  • A God-sized dream says, I want to live a life that changes others.

  • A small dream is rooted in fear of failure.

  • A God-sized dream is rooted in faith that with God, all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)

When we shrink our dreams to fit our abilities, we leave no room for God to reveal His power.

Joseph’s Dream: A Case Study

In Genesis 37, Joseph had a dream that he would one day rise to leadership, and that even his brothers and parents would bow before him. His brothers mocked him. His father was puzzled. The dream seemed ridiculous.

But here’s the key: the dream was not Joseph’s idea — it was God’s seed planted in his heart.

From the pit, to slavery, to prison, Joseph’s life seemed to contradict his dream. Yet in God’s timing, the dream came to pass. He became second in command in Egypt, saving nations from famine and fulfilling the vision God gave him.

Joseph’s story reminds us that God-sized dreams are rarely easy or quick. They stretch us, test us, and sometimes break us — but they also position us for influence far beyond what we imagined.

Three Questions to Ask About Your Dreams

Does my dream require God’s intervention?

    • If you can achieve it with your own resources, maybe it’s too small.

    • God-sized dreams push you into faith, prayer, and total dependence on Him.

Does my dream align with God’s purpose?

  • Not every big idea is a God idea.

  • God-sized dreams will glorify Him and bless others, not just elevate you.

Am I willing to endure the process?

    • Every dreamer faces delays, disappointments, and detours.

    • The pit, the prison, and the palace are all part of God’s refining journey.

Breaking Free from Fear

One of the greatest dream-killers is fear. Fear of failing. Fear of being mocked. Fear of stepping into the unknown.

But 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Your dream should scare you a little — but it should excite you a lot. That’s usually a sign it’s bigger than you, and just right for God to step in.

Examples of God-Sized Dreams Today

  • A young believer feels called to start a non-profit that feeds thousands.

  • A teacher envisions raising leaders who will transform their communities.

  • An entrepreneur wants to launch a business that funds Kingdom work worldwide.

These are not just business plans or career moves. They are dreams that go beyond human limitation and lean into God’s supernatural provision.

Practical Steps to Align Your Dreams with God’s Size

  • Pray Boldly

    • Ask God to expand your vision. Ephesians 3:20 says He is able to do “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.”

  • Write It Down

    • Habakkuk 2:2 reminds us to write the vision and make it plain. Clarity fuels faith.

  • Take Small Steps

    • Even God-sized dreams begin with one obedient action. Start small, stay faithful.

  • Surround Yourself with Faith Builders

    • Not everyone will believe in your dream — Joseph’s brothers didn’t. But you need voices that push you forward, not hold you back.

    • Prepare for Resistance

      • The bigger the dream, the greater the opposition. But also, the greater the glory when God fulfills it

Closing Reflection

So let me ask you again: does your dream match the size of your God?

If your vision feels impossible, uncomfortable, or even laughable to others, you might be closer to the mark than you think. Remember, God delights in using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things — because it brings Him glory.

Your responsibility is to dream courageously, trust Him wholeheartedly, and take the steps He places before you. His responsibility is to do what only He can do: turn the impossible into reality.
